Does Tricare or Tricare for Life Cover Hearing Aids?

Plus, untangling how TRICARE for Life and Medicare work together.
Last update on Aug, 21, 2025

For those who have served in the military and their families, navigating hearing aid coverage under TRICARE or TRICARE for Life can be a complex and confusing task. If you've been unsure about your coverage, you're not alone.

We’re here to break it down and answer some of the most common questions.

What is TRICARE?

TRICARE is the official health care program for:

  • Active duty service members and family members
  • National Guard and Reserve members and their family members
  • Retirees and retiree family members
  • Survivors (spouses and children of deceased military members)
  • Certain former spouses.

While TRICARE originated with three plans, it’s since grown to offer many plans to accommodate its many members and their dependents.

Does TRICARE Cover Hearing Aids

In most cases, TRICARE does not cover hearing aids for retirees or their family members. [1] Active-duty service members may receive hearing aids if deemed medically necessary. TRICARE will cover hearing aids and related services for children of retired service members. However, the child needs to meet several requirements, including meeting specific hearing loss and medical criteria and being enrolled in the TRICARE Prime or US Family Health Plan. They also need a living sponsor. [2]

Does TRICARE for Life Cover Hearing Aids

It's important to note that TRICARE for Life does not cover hearing aids, although there are some unique exceptions. While this program helps fill in some of the gaps left by Medicare, hearing aids are not part of its standard benefits. Understanding these limitations can help you manage expectations and plan for alternative coverage options.

How Do Medicare and TRICARE for Life Work Together?

TRICARE for Life provides secondary coverage to Medicare. This means it’s a secondary payer to Medicare for those who are TRICARE-eligible. Medicare pays first, and then TRICARE for Life may cover some or all of the remaining costs. But since Medicare also does not cover hearing aids, TRICARE for Life usually will not as well.

That’s why we’re seeing people start to compare TRICARE for Life vs Medicare Advantage plans, which do offer hearing aid benefits.

Note: TRICARE for Life can only be used by those who are TRICARE-eligible and have both Medicare Part A and Part B. It doesn’t extend to family members.

TRICARE vs Medicare: Understanding the Differences in Hearing Aid Coverage

  • Original Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids, but it does cover routine hearing tests. Recent changes mean you can see an audiologist for a hearing evaluation once every 12 months without a physician’s order. Covered tests include those for non-acute hearing conditions but not tests for imbalance.
  • TRICARE for Life can offer additional coverage but doesn’t cover hearing aids.
  • Most Medicare Advantage Plans include hearing aid benefits and may be worth exploring.

Our Amplifon Hearing Health Care team is here to guide you through hearing benefits so you can get the assistance you need. Here are a few more questions we receive:

Is TRICARE for Life a Medicare Supplement?

No, TRICARE for Life is not a Medicare supplement; it’s a healthcare plan with its own rules and specific eligibility criteria. If you use TRICARE for Life and Medicare together, you have the benefit of dual coverage.

Does TRICARE Cover Hearing Aids for Seniors?

No, hearing aids are not included in routine TRICARE for Life coverage, even for retirees.

Does TRICARE Cover Hearing Aids for Spouses?

No, hearing aids are not included in routine TRICARE for Life coverage for spouses.

Do I Have Other Options for Hearing Aid Coverage?

Yes! If you’re a military retiree or spouse and find yourself without hearing aid coverage, you may still have options:

  • Veterans Affairs (VA). If you’re eligible for VA health care, you may qualify for hearing aids. [4]
  • Retiree-at-Cost Hearing Aid Program (RACHAP). While RACHAP offers a discount on hearing aids, it does require traveling to a military hospital or clinic, which can be difficult if one isn’t nearby. [5]

Find a nearby military hospital or clinic.

  • Medicaid. In some states, Medicaid provides hearing aid benefits to eligible adults. [6]
  • Medicare Advantage. These plans frequently include hearing aid coverage. Check your options during open enrollment.
  • Amplifon Hearing Health Care. We offer hearing aid discounts, network access, and flexible care options to bridge coverage gaps. Learn more about our program.
